You must complete a Certification Request for each session.
1. What is BAH?
a. BAH stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. It is a monthly living allowance for students using the Post 9/11 (Chapter 33) GI Bill.
2. How much BAH do I get?
a. For a student at the 100% eligibility level enrolled in school full time, BAH currently caps off at $1422 per full month of school. It is calculated by the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents for the 78666 zip code.
b. BAH is prorated for both eligibility percentage and partial months of school.
3. When do I receive my BAH?
a. The VA disburses BAH on the first of the month for the month prior.
b. For example: on October 1st, students will receive BAH for September.
4. What is considered “full time?”
a. During a regular semester, undergraduates enrolled at least 12 hours are considered full time. Undergrads enrolled in at least 4 hours per summer session are still considered full time.
b. During a regular semester, graduates enrolled in at least 9 hours are considered full time students. Graduates enrolled in at least 4 hours per summer session are also considered full time students.
5. What if I’m not enrolled as a full time student?

ii. Graduates: at least 5 hours during regular semesters; 3 hours per summer sessions
6. Do I get BAH if I’m taking online courses?
a. Yes, but student must be in at least 1 hour of coursework on campus to receive full BAH.
b. BAH for students attending all online coursework will only receive 50% of their normal rate.
7. I didn’t get my BAH check. Why?
a. Once a student’s GI Bill request is processed by the Texas State Veterans Affairs Office, it is sent off to Muskogee, OK for processing. They are the ones who actually disburse the BAH checks.
Depending on when the student turns in their appropriate paperwork, it is not unusual for the Regional VA Office to experience a 30-45 day processing time. This is on top of the amount of time it takes for a student’s paperwork to get processed by this office, so it is always best to turn in paperwork as early as possible. To check on a BAH check’s status, students should call the Muskogee Regional Office at (888) 442-4551. Muskogee generally experiences a high call volume, so students should expect to wait on hold for a while. It is best to call early in the mornings.
8. I didn’t get my full BAH check. Why?
a. Ensure that you were certified as a full time student. You can do that by asking anyone in this office.
b. The VA no longer does break pay, so if it is the first full month back to school from summer or winter breaks, students should not expect a whole BAH check. They only pay for those days a student is enrolled in classes.
