Eligibility Requirements

To apply:

  1. Gain admittance to Texas State University if you have not done so.
  2. Determine if you qualify for the Hazlewood Exemption. You must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible:
    • Home of record on DD-214 (Member 4) must be listed as Texas or legal proof of Texas residency at time of initial entry into service.

       

    • Type of discharge on DD-214 must show honorable or under honorable conditions.

       

    • Texas residency must have been established before date of registration at a college or university.

       

    • May not be in default on federal or state student loans.

       

    • Must be eligible for in-state tuition.
  3. Request a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs in Muskogee, OK (1-888-442-4551) stating you have exhausted your Montgomery GI Bill educational benefits.
  4. Complete a Hazlewood Application for Veterans who have Never Used the Exemption.
  5. Complete a Hazlewood information sheet.
  6. Submit to Texas State VA Office before the 12th class day for fall and spring or before the 4th class day for summer.
